Welcome To Coop's Rockies Farm Coop’s Rockies is a small Rocky Mountain horse farm committed to the preservation and advancement of this rare breed. We are located in North Central Kentucky, nestled in between Louisville and Lexington, in Shelbyville KY. Our focus is raising registered Rocky Mountain horses. We breed for old bloodlines, for horses that display a natural 4-beat gait, and the gentle loving temperament Rocky Mountain horses are known for. We are proud of our breeding stock. Our broodmares are descendants of “Kilburn’s Chocolate Sundown”, “Sewell’s Sam”, “Sam Clemon’s Tim” and “Yankee”.This year we are introducing our new Stallion “Coop’s Freedom”, a three year old Black colt. He has been color DNA tested and does not carry a red or bay gene. His temperament and gait totally exhibit what a Rocky Mountain horse should be. His pedigree includes four of the five sons’ of “TOBE”. “Kilburn’s Chocolate Sundown”, “Maple’s Squirrel”, “Sam Clemon’s Tim”, and “Yankee”. Watch for “Coop’s Freedom” in the show ring this season. We color DNA test our horses to eliminate some of the guesswork in breeding for certain colors. Three of our broodmares are chocolate with flax manes and tails, but also have one copy of the cream gene. No red or bay. It makes foal color projections very interesting. Since we are a small farm, it gives us more time for “hand’s on” attention to our young horses. We “Imprint” each foal at birth. Before they take that first step, we gently rub them all over from head to toe. We have found they are much calmer, have less fear, and in many cases will actually approach us for attention. Coop’s Rockies training method is that of “Natural Horsemanship”, which begins virtually at birth. Once a foal is up on all four legs, the training begins. We have found through trial and error that “Natural Horsemanship” is the best type of training for us because it’s fair to the horse, allowing them to process information in training sessions without fear of physical punishment. We do not believe in fear tactics. We will only correct a horse that is being disrespectful, and the correction is virtually the same an alpha mare would. Rocky Mountain horses also make wonderful trail horses. The enjoyment Doug and I get from raising and riding horses that are naturally gaited, sure-footed and brave is very satisfying. It's awesome the way naturally gaited Rocky Mountain horses respond to rocks, logs, creeks and wildlife. They do great in the woods because Rocky Mountain horses were originally bred for trail riding. We would love to help you find your perfect horse. Whether for trail or show, we may have what you’re looking for in an equine companion. Come see us. Why just ride, when you can glide?
